How to Eat Healthier on a Road Trip

July 31, 2018NRG 4 Life FitnessUncategorized

It’s Summer, you’re at the beach, fast food and summer treats are at every corner. It can be confusing to decide which foods are better for you, especially when you have less options on the road. Here’s some tips to help you decide which common foods are better for you.

CLUBHOUSE SANDWICH VS COBB SALAD

You’d think a sandwich would have more carbs than a salad – wrong! The clubhouse sandwich has about 600 calories whereas a large Cobb salad can have around 700, sometimes more! We think the salad is automatically the better option but with the eggs, avocado, blue cheese, bacon and creamy oily dressing the calories really add up!

HAMBURGER VS WINGS

Burgers can range in size but the typical fast food burger has about 500 calories. If you want to make it lighter, hold the cheese and special sauce and just use a touch of ketchup, mustard and lighter toppings. You might think chicken wingsare lighter because they sound like they don’t have carbs., Howeer – they are often breaded, deep fried and then sauced up.

POPCORN VS COTTON CANDY

While cotton candy is only 110 calories – it’s just basically just sugar and air. Rather than relying on buying snacks for the beach, pack healthier crunch options. Instead, go with popcorn or baked chips! If you can pack smaller snack size bags rather than big bags so you eat the right portion instead of devouring the entire family sized bag to yourself!

FREEZIE VS ICE CREAM

A soft-serve ice cream might seem like the right way to go but a freezie is much better. A freezie only has 70 calories and lasts a while cooling you off nicely. The soft serve cone will set you back about 250 calories.

GELATO VS SORBET

Not all gelato is created equally. 1/2 cup of a fruit flavour sorbetto type gelato only has about 90 cal per half cup. Add the cone which has about 50 calories and you’re at 140 cal. The milk based creamier flavours like chocolate, pistachio, hazelnut etc. have about 250 cal per half cup. You’re much better of going with a fruit flavoured gelato.

BEER VS COOLER

Yes, you read that right! A bottle of beer has about 150 calories. Light beer would be even better at about 100 calories per bottle. You might think that wine coolers are better but they often have more calories and sugar as they contain a mix of alcohol sugar and fruit juice and can ring in at 220 cal per bottle.
