It’s climate controlled, and on slippery, cool (and in the summer – hot) days, it’s a safer alternative to being outdoors. With warmer weather just around the corner though, I’ll share with you the benefits to hitting the trails, and sidewalks running!
Running outside offers numerous benefits, including improved mental and physical health, increased vitamin D absorption, and a chance to enjoy nature, while also providing a varied and engaging workout experience.
Here’s a more detailed look at the benefits of running outside:
Physical Health Benefits:
Running, in general, strengthens the heart and lungs, improves stamina, and can lower resting heart rate and blood pressure.
Regular running, including outdoor running, is linked to a lower risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease, certain cancers, and type 2 diabetes.
Running on varied surfaces, like trails and pavement, helps build and strengthen bones.
Outdoor running can burn more calories than treadmill running due to factors like wind resistance and varied terrain.
Exposure to sunlight while running outside helps the body produce vitamin D, which is crucial for bone density and immune health.
Running outside, especially on uneven terrain, engages a wider range of muscles and improves balance and core strength.
